Official Diocesan Position on Dispensation, Marriage, Place of Marriage and Ecumenical and Interfaith Marriages

Position Letter from Father Robert Morrissey, J.C.D., Assistant to the Vicar General of the Diocese.

Anno domini, 2002

Letter Granting Authorization and Dispensation from Canon Form

Rockville Centre I write to inform you that proper authorization, including a dispensation from canonical form, has been granted, permitting you and your intended spouse to be married validly and licitly in a non-Catholic ceremony with a Rabbi serving as officiant.

Although a Catholic priest or deacon may be present at the ceremony, only the Rabbi may take the consent and sign the Marriage license. May I remind you that the ceremony is to take place indoors; (this was done on a patio overlooking the bay) weddings out-of-doors are not permitted in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Please note that this special authorization is valid only for the place and date you specified, namely, at John Anthony's Catering Facility in Babylon, on the date you specified. Should plans for your marriage change in any way, please contact this office immediately at 516-678-5800.

In order to make certain your marriage is recorded accurately in our diocesan register, please check the enclosed Notification of Marriage form to correct any mistakes and to complete the name and address of the officiant and the exact name of the two witnesses.

After the wedding has been celebrated, please return this Notification of Marriage to me. I shall then send you a valid Catholic marriage certificate if you will be so kind as to indicate where you and your spouse will be residing.

With best wishes for a happy and holy marriage, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Reverend Robert O. Morrissey, J.C.D.
